Scout Comics' & Oren Segal's MPE to develop MIDNIGHT WESTERN THEATRE For Television

Scout Comics' & Oren Segal's MPE to develop MIDNIGHT WESTERN THEATRE For Television

June 20th, 2022 -- As first reported by DEADLINE, Scout Comics has partnered with Oren Segal's Management Production Entertainment (MPE) to develop Louis Southard's MIDNIGHT WESTERN THEATRE, which featured art by David Hahn. Kevin Carroll is attached to adapt. Scout, Segal and Carroll will produce.

In MIDNIGHT WESTERN THEATRE, the notorious Red Tom and his deadly posse have laid claim to the once prosperous town of Liberty Springs. But will these outlaws be able to savor their sinful victory when two black-clad, supernatural strangers suddenly arrive?

"I was instantly drawn to the world of Midnight Western Theatre, with its razor-sharp wit and ingenious premise," Carroll said. "It blends the grittiness of a classic Spaghetti Western with the pulse-pounding elements of Gothic Horror. It's a big, expansive world, populated with creepy creatures and demonic cultists. And at its core, a charming, endearing, heartbreaking story of two friends who have each other's backs, no matter what."

“I never thought anything like this would ever happen to me or for my story, so I’m excited to see MWT in such good hands," Southard added.

Segal formed MPE in 2011 and has produced BURNING PALMS, starring Zoe Saldana, Rosamund Pike, Anson Mount and Dylan McDermott; THE CURSE OF DOWNERS GROVE, Bret Easton Ellis’ adaptation of Michael Hornburg’s novel; and #HORROR, starring Chloe Sevigny, Timothy Hutton, and Natasha Lyonne. Currently, Segal is producing DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD, a remake of the hit 1991 film.  Segal is producing with Michael Phillips (TAXI DRIVER, THE STING) and Treehouse Pictures. Bille Woodruff (BEAUTY SHOP, HONEY) will direct.  Emmy-nominated Chuck Hayward (DEAR WHITE PEOPLE) wrote the screenplay.

Kevin Carroll has worked in the story development departments at MGM, Paramount, and The Donners Company. In 2018, he placed as a finalist for a HUMANITAS Fellowship for his pilot LIFE’S NO FAIRYTALE.

Louis Southard is a breakout comic book talent, with MIDNIGHT WESTERN THEATRE being only his second title. The first was Action Lab Entertainment’s VILLAINS SEEKING HERO.

Scout Comics & Entertainment was founded in 2015 and has over 250 titles in their catalog. Scout books have sold to Disney, Amazon Studios, Rooster Teeth, and FilmNation, among others.

Summary
Characters killing their authors. Authors trafficking their characters to be sex workers in the real world. Actors morally abusing characters they play. Real people illegally settling in cartoons so as to never age again. That’s just a regular Tuesday for our META agents. The Metalinguistic Crimes Division patrols the borders between our world and the many universes of comics, cinema, games, theater, literature, and other narrative media.

When a comic book artist is murdered in a weird fashion, META takes the case. Alan, the victim’s brother-in-law and a frustrated, wannabe writer, gets involved in the investigation, and discovers he can somehow enter comic books at will. He also starts unlocking repressed memories from his childhood, when he lived in several fictional worlds.  Now, Alan and META need to work together to find Alan’s kidnapped sister, before she suffers the same fate as her late boyfriend.

Quote From The Creative Team

“META is an ambitious project 10 years in the making, and I’m thrilled it will be my first entry to the US comic book market. I hope readers will find it as exciting to read as it was for me to conceive. A shout-out for Scout Comics for the partnership, which I believe will be the first of many. It’s great to know my baby is in the hands of a team of comic creators and enthusiasts. Also, I’ve talked to the characters in META—they said they’re pretty happy too… so there’s that.” (Marcelo)

"It's awesome to be part of this great creative family at Scout, with so many new artists. I hope you like Meta as much as I enjoyed making it." (André)

SCOUT COMICS & COMICS ON COFFEE Announce Strategic Partnership

JUNE 13, 2022 - SCOUT COMICS & ENTERTAINMENT HOLDINGS, one of the fastest growing independent comic companies, is partnering with the Fort Myers-based company COMICS ON COFFEE  to launch a series of Scout Comics inspired coffee flavors and collectible comics.

Scout’s President, James Haick III, said of the partnership, “We here at Scout couldn’t be more excited about partnering with Tanya & Tony Scholl and their amazing coffee company. We can’t wait to share the cool coffee flavors and titles we have coming out.”

One of the first releases will be a metal cover comic and 12 ounce coffee combo pack of the ultra popular comic THE RECOUNT,  A limited edition (individually numbered out of 100) metal cover is now available while supplies last.

Bueller, from the acclaimed YouTube channel “COMICS WITH BUELLER,” sat down with co-owner Tony Scholl of Comics on Coffee to discuss this new partnership.

For those out there that are unfamiliar with Comics On Coffee, What makes you unique & not just another coffee company?

Aside from roasting our own specialty grade coffees & having a direct trade relationship with the coffee farmers; we love everything comics. That’s why every bag of coffee we make isn’t just great on the inside, its great on the outside too. Each bag reflects the art, stories, and even the feel of the comics they portray. There’s something special about seeing a character or title on a coffee bag; the very fuel that helped these writers, and artists complete such awesomeness.

What is this team up with Scout Comics all about?

Both companies are dedicated to the comic book community and the creators who work tirelessly to deliver titles that keep us thirsty for more. At Comics On Coffee, we love to work with creators to bring custom coffees to life. From the flavor to the art, we strive to create a product that reflects each creators vision for what coffee would be like in their world… and that’s where Scout comes in.

Scout has been so awesome to work with, giving us access to all of their titles, creators, and visions. Then they go a step further and collaborate projects to help make everything we create as authentic as possible.

What is this Team-up about?

It’s about working together to release super rare comic books, bundled with coffee bags that are designed specifically to match. Each bundle also includes a digital copy of the first issue. So frame that amazingly rare book, open up your digital copy, and sit back with a great tasting coffee so unique that it must be from a comic book world.

Can you tell us a little bit about the first product being released and what makes it so special?

The first bundle will be epic! It’s a limited edition release of the number one key issue of The Recount. This will be a never before seen metal cover that is only available in this bundle. It comes with a matching Coffee bag and a digital copy of the first issue so you don’t have to crack open your amazing metal cover just to get into the story.

Tell us about a normal day at Comics On Coffee.

For me it’s pretty simple. I start up the roaster then begin to prepare the green coffee...I watch each batch roast carefully, maintaining the proper temperature and roasting profile for what I’m trying to create. After every roast I taste-test as sample from each batch to make sure it’s showing all the right flavors, bold notes, and smooth aftertaste; which of course is always my favorite part.

Tanya likes to start her day with a cup of Lightspeed. It’s our high caffeine coffee for the quick wake up that she needs. She then continues checking emails and fulfilling orders. Around lunch time she stops for another cup of one of our flavored coffees, generally the Santa’s X-Mas or The Third Wave Blueberry. After a quick lunch she spends the afternoon designing upcoming coffee bags or K-pod boxes. Occasionally, she has a comic book cover to draw.

What are you most excited about in your partnership with Scout moving forward?

In the short time we have been working with Scout Comics we have seen time and again examples of how Scout Comics is always thinking outside the box, from comic tags to their recently released Pressworks printer plates, Scout Comics is not afraid to take a chance and create something new. We love this because we adore the comic book industry, and we believe this kind of out of the box thinking will revolutionize this industry, it will add value and freshness to this market and make comic books exciting in new ways. Here at Comics On Coffee we are delighted to be able to work with Scout and be a small part of that.

Easta, who turns out to have some morals left, rescues the alien from Dr. Bone and takes it upon himself to protect the creature. Easta realizes he’s just gonna have to kill Dr. Bone and anyone else who gets in his way...

Scout Comics' Has Partnered With Screenwriter James Butler To Develop MULLET COP As An Animated Series

Scout Comics' Has Partnered With Screenwriter James Butler To Develop MULLET COP As An Animated Series

May 24th, 2022 --Scout Comics & Entertainment LLC has partnered with screenwriter James Butler to develop Tom Lintern's post-apocalyptic sci-fi comedy MULLET COP as an animated series. Kevin Biggins is attached as showrunner and Adriel Garcia will direct.

After a near-death experience, a mall cop goes undercover as a manager at an all-you-can-eat buffet. With the help of his coworkers and a supercomputer/microwave called M.I.T.T. (Mall Industries Two Thousand), he takes on crime boss Robogrannie and her gang of thugs.

James Butler has sold projects to MTV and Comedy Central, and is currently a writer on Hulu's ANIMANIACS/PINKY & THE BRAIN reboot. Along with Mullet Cop, James and his frequent collaborator, Jon Scott, are also currently developing an action feature with SR-48 productions.

Kevin Biggins is a stand-up, former Co-Executive Producer on FAMILY GUY, and is currently an Executive Producer on CONQUEST at Netflix.  Adriel Garcia has worked on SUPERJAIL, UNIKITTY, and most recently ANIMANIACS.

Tom Lintern is an illustrator and storyboard artist with clients in the publishing, video game, and advertising industry. His clients have ranged from Penguin Books and Simon & Schuster to ESPN and McDonald's. Lintern wrote and illustrated his first comic book series GIRRION in 2015 and MULLET COP in 2021, both published by Scout Comics.

"Tom's comic is original, funny and totally irreverent," James Butler said. "It's filled with nostalgia while also being topical in its portrayal of an insatiable capitalistic society. But what's really important is that the main character is an undercover cop who has a wicked mullet, fights robot-grandmas, and gets his mission information from a super-computer microwave."

Lintern added, "It's quite a transition to go from working solo on this story to collaborating with such an amazing group. This team is going to make something absolutely hilarious."
Scout Comics' & State Street Pictures Developing Film Based On ASSASSIN & SON Comic Book Series

Scout Comics' & State Street Pictures Developing Film Based On ASSASSIN & SON Comic Book Series

May 4th, 2022 -- As reported in DEADLINE earlier today, State Street Pictures has optioned the comic book ASSASSIN AND SON, created and written by Shad Gaspard and Marc Copani with art by Eder Messiah.  Scout Comics & Entertainment, who published the comic, is attached to produce along with State Street.

Donovan Braddock is a one-man killing unit who works with a team of covert assassins known as “The Horsemen.” When Braddock finds love, and makes a family of his own, he attempts to leave that life of violence behind. But he discovers that his old life still torments him when his wife is murdered in front of him and his young son. Now, with nothing to live for, this tragic event sends father and son on an epic journey of revenge and consequence.

Gaspard and Copani are former professional WWE wrestlers who teamed up to write ASSASSIN AND SON after retiring from wrestling. Tragically, Shad Gaspard passed away in May 2020 while swimming in Venice Beach with his young son when the two were caught in a riptide, shortly before the publication of ASSASSIN AND SON #1. Gaspard was recently inducted into the 2022 WWE Hall of Fame posthumously.

“We’re thrilled at the opportunity to bring Shad and Marc’s comic to life. What excites us creatively is the balance of hard-hitting action and emotional themes presented in the source material," said Lawrence Mott, Creative Executive at State Street.
"We met Shad at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019," said Don Handfield of Scout Comics. "He was known for his brawn in the world of wrestling, but what we were taken by was his humor, intelligence and creative genius. We were blown away by his and Marc's comic, and we're proud to bring it to the world. We are happy that his legacy has a chance to live on through this partnership with State Street."

State Street recently wrapped On the Come Up, Angie Thomas’ best-selling follow up to The Hate U Give, which they also produced. In addition, Street Street has produced the hit Barbershop franchise for MGM, Soul FoodFaster starring Dwayne Johnson, and Men of Honor starring Oscar winners Cuba Gooding Jr., Robert De Niro, and Charlize Theron, among other films.

Scout Comics & Entertainment was founded in 2015 and has over 200 titles in their catalog. Scout books have sold to Disney, Amazon Studios, and FilmNation, among others.

Quotes From The Creative Team

“We wanted this to be a book in the tradition of Geof Darrow’s Hard Boiled or Shaolin Cowboy.  Big ideas and big feelings; high-scifi, and inventive action. It’s taken years to get it just right, but that effort has resulted in something surprising and special.” — Deniz Camp (creator/author)

“Working on each page turned out to be a little adventure with its own challenges and interesting discoveries. And, perhaps, this is the most important thing I would like to express... That the reader, too, should go on an adventure in the pages of our story. May they find Waldo there! Who knows? (Not a Spoiler).” — Filya Bratukhin (artist)

“This project has been a long time in the making. It's a true passion project for all involved and I'm proud to be part of such a great team. A lot of hard work went into it, and I'm excited for people to get their hands on it.” — Jason Wordie (colorist)

“Getting to see Filya and Jason’s art on this series has been the highlight of the past few months. Every new page just melts my mind, and I can’t wait for people to see what everyone has done on this comic.” — Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (letters)
